Gaming Notebook Review - Alienware M17X

Dell Inc. acquired Alienware as a subsidiary in March 2006; however, Alienware was established about 10 years ago. Alienware had specialized in high performance desktops, laptops and workstations. Previously, most major manufacturers, including Dell had failed to see the potential of the high performance gaming market. As the demand for gaming laptops grew, Dell was drawn towards Alienware.
Alienware's name itself as well as the names of its company products are inspired by the successful TV series, The X-Files. Even the designs of its laptops have extra-terrestrial themes.
Alienware's absorption into Dell did not result to drastic changes to its products. Alienware actually got a lot of leverage now since it still has autonomy with regards to design and marketing while it benefits from Dell's supply chain, purchasing power, and production capabilities.
There's no doubting the fact that the Alienware M17x is a gamer's machine. The design is not ambiguous at all. LED lights are found everywhere on the M17x and we especially like the option that allows the user to customize the lighting combo.
Like most gaming laptops, the M17x is quite heavy. And it is made heavier due to the metal trimmings, the eccentric design, the chassis, and its internal parts. Even the lid is heavy. Portability is decreased since we doubt that people would enjoy carrying this much weight around.
We like its full-sized keyboard that's as responsive as any laptop we've tried. The M17x is able to do multimedia tasks extremely well. The figures say it all: 17-inch display with a 1920 x 1200 high-definition resolution. In addition, its speakers produce clear and loud sounds.
Alienware does claim that the M17x is the "the most powerful laptop in the universe." We're not sure about that but we'll go along and say that it ranks quite high on that list. The laptop is equipped with two Nvidia's GeForce GTX 280M graphics cards and a 2.53-GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9300 CPU. With these, no game would be too heavy to play.
Other features of the M17x include HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, four USB 2.0, eSATA, DisplayPort and FireWire ports, plus, a memory card reader, and an ExpressCard/54 slot.
SPECS AVAILABLE OPTIONS (From Dell's website)
CPU - Intel Core 2 Suo P8600 (3MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB) up to Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9300 (12MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
RAM - 4GB, 6GB, 8GB DDR31
Screen Size - 17-inch WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 - (900p) LCD, 17-inch WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 - (1200p) LCD
Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
Battery Life - About 3 hours
Graphics - Single 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M, SLI Dual 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M
Pros
It's difficult not to obsess about the Alienware M17x with its many top-of-the-line features and sheer power. We like its style and its sturdiness. Most people would definitely find the customization options useful, plus has outstanding graphics. Because it can be easily configured, it is more practical than others.
Cons
The weight of the Alienware M17x is a minor problem. Upgrading the device is costly as well as causing more inconvenience since it adds more weight. Its battery life leaves much to be desired.
Conclusion
We recommend the Alienware M17x to gamers, consumers, and businesspersons alike. It is just that good. If you don't mind the aching of your shoulder after lugging it around a few times or if it stays on the desk most of the time anyway, then this laptop should definitely be considered a major contender for most people's attention and money.

Alienware Gaming Computers

Alienware is a Miami-based computer manufacturer famed for its high end gaming machines such as the M11x 3D laptop. It is a fully owned subsidiary of computer giant Dell Inc. Its laptops and desktop products often feature outlandishly styled cases and top end components, often with price tags to match.
Although termed a manufacturer, Alienware simply take components manufactured by third party companies such a Gigabyte and Intel and assembles them into the finished products.
Although primarily aimed at the PC gaming fraternity, thanks to the high specification nature of the components used, Alienware computers are suitable for other intense applications such as editing high-definition video, audio production and graphics work. They could therefore be considered as a good alternative to an Apple iMac or MacBook for such tasks.
Although Alienware customers are free to choose their gaming PC peripherals such as headsets, mice and keyboards, they offer their own branded products to fill this niche. Despite bearing Alienware branding, these components are usually re-branded items that are manufactured by other companies.
The beginnings of Alienware
The company was founded in 1996 in order to cater for gamers who demanded the ultimate in high-end machines. At the time the big manufacturers such as Dell and HP didn't offer true gaming PC's, with those looking for such machines having to source individual components and build the rigs themselves.
As technology developed, Alienware found another gap in the market for notebook or laptop based gaming machines, something which wasn't offered by the big names. Due to the bespoke nature of notebook computers, a self build by the enthusiast wasn't an option in this sector.
Their distinctive science-fiction based styling also made the company stand out from the beige boxes usually offered by the big names at the time.
Dell Takeover
Dell took over the company in 2006 and has run it as a subsidiary ever since, leaving Alienware free to develop M11x gaming laptops and other such products whilst enjoying the buying power and technical expertise of such a large and respected technology company. Not only this, but Alienware products were only sold in six countries prior to the takeover, but with Dell's supply chain they are now offered in 45 countries around the world.
Manufacture of Alienware gaming computers takes place in its traditional base in Miami, Florida and also at the Dell facility in County Westmeath, Ireland.
At the time of the takeover, Dell offered a range of gaming machines branded as XPS. Over the following years, keen not to hurt its new acquisitions sales, the Dell XPS range changed its focus from purely gaming PC's to a general high end offering. Now the XPS range offers 3D screens and Blu-ray drive to mark them as high end products.

Are Alienware Gaming Laptops Worth Buying?

Perhaps one of the most discussed questions in gaming circles: are Alienware gaming laptops worth the price you have to pay for one of these high-performance rigs? This argument runs along several viewpoints which are heatedly debated by hardcore gamers. Close examination of these discussions may prove helpful if you're looking to buy one of these machines.
First, many gamers suggest buying any laptop, Alienware or otherwise, for gaming is a totally ridiculous idea. Gaming laptops are often over priced, they are difficult to upgrade and because everything is pushed into such a tight space, fan noise and overheating are common problems which keep arising. Instead, gamers should stick with a gaming desktop PC which is much cheaper and don't have the problems as those associated with gaming notebooks.
However, despite this argument gaming laptops are increasing in popularity and top brand names like Alienware, Falcon, Rock... have taken on a "cult-like" status among many gamers. These maxed-out, high-performance machines are stylized versions of pure gaming power. They are designed to capture the eye as well as the heart. And the buying public have signaled their approval by opening their wallets.
But regardless of how nice they look - are Alienware gaming laptops worth the price?
Actually, prices have been steadily falling and you can now get an entry level Alienware at a reasonable price, the extremely portable M11x even comes in under a $1000. However, for a totally maxed out system with the highest components, you're still looking at a 4 or 5 grand price tag. Ouch!
But lets face it, if you want the top-level processors and top-level GPUs or graphics cards, you are going to have to pay top dollar no matter if it's Alienware or some other manufacturer. As long as they get the quality, many gamers don't mind paying the price. After all, these machines are luxury items, although they can serve a practical purpose especially if you want it for video editing or heavy graphic design work.
But many argue that you can get a decent gaming laptop at a lower price by going with a lesser known brand such as Asus, MSI or even Toshiba. If you shop around, you will probably find cheaper gaming rips but they won't be an Alienware machine. Some gamers just won't settle for anything less than an Alienware laptop.
However, even here, there are opposing views because of the whole Dell issue, some gamers don't like buying a Dell product. Alienware was purchased by Dell in 2006, and although Alienware has kept its own brand since then, it is now marketed through Dell. Many gamers resent this fact, although in reality, Dell with its XPS line does produce some half-decent gaming notebooks.
Still, the question remains, are they worth the money?
Probably yes, because Alienware produces some of the fastest and best gaming laptops on the planet, however, that top style and performance comes at a premium. In the end, that question comes down to the eye of the beholder and how deep are their pockets? If they can afford it, many gamers will still pick Alienware over a cheaper model, because they simply have to have an Alienware. That's a good enough reason for many gamers.

Mobile Banking Security

Any bank or credit union pretty much has to offer mobile banking. This is because the customers demand it, people want the ability to pay their bills and view balances among other things. Very few people, especially the younger generation do banking the old way. Some are even beginning to offer services of uploading a scanned check for deposit.
Because of this, almost any bank, including large or small has some kind of mobile banking. Of course this is great, but oftentimes mobile banking security is neglected as they implement the changes quickly. With banks having a lot of sensitive information, it is very important that security is taken seriously. Not only that, but some high profile banks have been hacked in the past. Banks are a target for hackers, not only for the information they hold, but others do it for political reasons.
Steps have been implemented at most banking websites. Usually they go above the typical user name and password. Some require a code every time you login from a new location, ensuring that you are able to access your personal email or cell phone. This is one step to verify who you are. Others have security questions that you must answer. The answers are supplied when the user signs up. This of course cuts down on problems. Others require a password that is hard to guess, consisting of random numbers and letters, lowercase and upper case. Some even require you to change your password periodically.
Of course the best mobile banking security will be vulnerable, because nothing it truly secure. But if the right steps are taken, it will ensure that the bank will most likely not be targeted. The customer needs to do thinks on their end as well, such as having a good password, not sharing it with others, and using secure connections. It would be very easy for someone to get a banking password at a wifi hotspot. Also the customer needs to make sure they log out of shared machines.
Mobile banking security should not be overlooked. If a site is targeted and successfully penetrated. The bank opens themselves to a lot of liability. Furthermore, when high profile cases make the news, a lot of customers lose confidence in the bank and even close accounts and bank elsewhere. Having customers data exposed is a public relations

Mobile Ecommerce As a Mobile Banking Technology

Like the other businesses, banks too have tasted the increased revenue income with mobile technologies and from then onwards mobile ecommerce solutions are constantly reviving the banking industries. With the availability of the bank related financial services via Smartphones, banking technology has arrived at a new milestone called mobile banking.
Mobile banking or mbanking is getting popular among banks around the world as it has proved additional revenue generation by reducing costs and simultaneously catering to the needs of the tech savvy customers. The customers are served the best by mobile banking solutions as this technology enables secure financial transactions even via unsecured networks.
With the advancements in mobile technologies customers plan and strategize their banking transactions while on the move with a sense of security. Within an empirical research poll, it was found that banking industries profit heavily from three kinds of people.
The three target audiences of mobile banking technology are:
Youngsters: The teenagers on an overall analysis might not have relevancy in contributing to the revenue or financial inputs but these are the folk that will determine the banks' future economy with respect to technological upgrades. The 'school group' will be the future entrepreneurs and business professionals who are used to ubiquitous computing and will definitely expect their banking transactions to be done with a simple click or touch. So banking industries should keep track of their future customers' habits and behaviors to frame a successful long term mobile banking solution.
Young Professionals: Admittingly this lot is unstable with their financial conditions but then, this scenario is just a passé with this group and banking professionals ought to consider their behaviors or activities to turn them into their loyal customers in the future that would contribute heavily in the incoming revenue for banks. This young generation set of people are innovative in their ventures and as tech savvy as the previous group but also sensitive when it comes to making monetary assets in trusted financial institutions. Thus, banks should frame policies that would enable investments in future from this core group of audience.
Business Clientele: Undoubtedly, the business owners of all niches are a muse to the banking industry. They are knowledgeable, economically sound and are time conscious. This set of the people look up to the banks for quick guidelines and financial transactions with respect to their investments and funds. Mobile device as medium of fund transfer between individual accounts is something this group will be interested in and by serving to this demand the bankers earn the trust and commitment from the business class people.
For all these unlimited demands from the various groups, mobile banking solutions help the banking industries to overcome the limitations posed by geographical barriers, demographic intensity and this step towards mcommerce in banking will ease out the pressure on the banking staff in remitting heavy amounts of currency. Mobile banking is also a safe option when it comes to foreign exchange transaction as this technology seamlessly encourages financial transactions over cross borders. Android, iPhone, Blackberry and Window Phone 7 are some of the best mobile phone operating systems on which bank related mobile apps are built.

Dell Alienware M17x - Ultimate Laptop For Ultimate Gaming

Two thumbs up to Dell for the Alienware M17x that makes gaming not a problem any longer no matter how resource-consuming a game is. Whether the game is a rather conventional 2D game or it is a game with highly detailed futuristic graphics, this one-of-a-kind laptop will run into no problem at all in processing such a game. The brand of Alienware may have always been an outstanding one. Yet, with this top-notch laptop, it seems like Dell is about to even further increase its outstanding quality. Hearing all that, at this point of time people may be asking what is really in this laptop to offer PC gamers, especially the hardcore ones, and other PC users who demand high performance.
Well, as always, the Alienware product lineups are always customizable and so is the so-called Dell Alienware M17x. To start it off, it comes offered with quite a few Intel processor options. For those users who think that their needs may not be too high, there are the Intel® Core™ i5 processors running at 2.4 and 2.53GHz to support them. Yet, for those who have higher demands, there is an Intel® Core™ i7 processor running at 2.66GHz. Better yet, there are the Quad Core versions of the Core™ i7 processors running at 1.6GHz and 1.73GHz. What is even more surprising is that Dell has also prepared this laptop with a capability of supporting those PC gamers or users who have extreme demand when it comes to speed, performance and reliability. These extreme users may feel more than glad to find out that they can customize their Dell Alienware M17x with an Intel® Core™ i7 extreme processor! This extreme processor runs at 2.0GHz and it will even boost up to 3.2GHz when used in Turbo Mode.
However, processors may find it hard at times if they are told to process heavily loaded applications or games without the help of some powerful graphics card. Fortunately, thanks to the ATI Radeon™ Mobility HD 5870 installed into this laptop, the processors are not quite likely to run into a hard time and thus will not disappoint the users. For the graphics card, users can choose between the single graphics card and the CrossfireX™ ATI Radeon featuring 1GB video memory.
Now, can serious PC gamers and users count on extreme processors and even the CrossfireX™ graphics card alone? Not really. This is perhaps why Dell offers up to a maximum of 8GB dual channel DDR3 running at 1066MHz. With this memory capacity, multitasking seems to be a piece of cake for this Alienware M17x.
Unfortunately, high capability processor, excellent graphics card and powerful memory capacity without a huge storage are not enough especially for ultimate gaming. But thanks to Dell, users can choose among a SATA-II HDD with a storage capacity up to 640GB, an SSD (Solid State Drive) with up to 256GB, Raid 0 HDD with up to 1.2TB and Raid 1 HDD with up to 640GB. All these storage options are surely huge enough to hold everything - be it games or graphics design software or any other kind of software PC users can possibly find - the users want.
Yet, there is one question that may well come across the users' mind. How are they going to install applications or games into the laptop? Well, they will not have to worry since Dell has thought of that. Dell offers the Alienware M17x users with the options of a dual layer DVD burner, dual layer Blu-ray reader and even a dual layer Blu-ray burner. With all these options, either the PC users or the hardcore PC gamers are not quite likely to find any difficulty in accessing all kinds of optical storage media they may probably find.
Those stuffs above are meant to provide users with unrivaled performance. Now, for the sake of users' vision, Dell Alienware M17x is equipped with a WideXGA+ display measuring 17 inches diagonally and it offers a resolution of 1440x900 pixels. Or, for even a better vision, users may choose the WideUXGA 17-inch RGB LED display with a resolution of up to 1920x1200 pixels.
Now, what about the operating system that the users are going to use? Well, the options consist of the genuine Windows® 7 64bit in all editions available. With that being said, those users who are up for everything Windows® 7 may probably offer, they can choose the Ultimate edition of the operating system from Microsoft. Yet, for the others, they may well choose either the Home Premium or the Professional edition.
Another customization option that is usually available when it comes to Alienware laptops is the color of the laptop itself. Well, in this case, users will be able to choose among lunar silver, space black and nebula red - which is a bit costly because it is a special edition, all with anodized aluminum case. But color is not the end of the customization Dell offers.
There is yet another customization item which is the personalized nameplate. So, as always, those who buy this laptop will be able to have their name engraved on this nameplate which makes Dell Alienware M17x unique to each of its owner. And, for even more customization, the owners of this remarkable laptop can choose what AlienFX color they would like to have. There is the Quasar Blue, Astral Aqua, Mars Red, Terra Green and Plasma Purple. Yet, for customizing operating system so that it reflects each user's personality, there is the AlienGUIse theme manager featuring Breed Theme. Also, the users can choose from several avatars and wallpapers to make their Dell Alienware M17x rather personal.
Last but not least, Dell offers a pre-installed World of Warcraft game as well. It seems that this has been a habit when it comes to the Alienware product lineups. The users can always expect some pre-installed games to come along with the laptop. But this is good in fact since it may save users the time required to install the accompanying game.

Other connections are a front side optical drive for use with either DVD/RW or Blu-ray so you can watch your favorite movies when you're done playing your favorite online games.
If you're concerned about network connection, this Alienware laptop can connect to the internet with a gigabit Ethernet controller, Wi-Fi, and 2.1 Bluetooth.
Gaming Experience
To enhance your gaming ability Alienware offers an optional Logitech G9 laser mouse and headset and two choices in screen resolution on the M17 model. This model also features a reflective glare type surface which adds a sense of vibrancy to the colours appearing on the display screen.
This notebook comes with a Core 2 Extreme X9100 CPU with 3.06 GHz plus 6MB L2 cache. You also have a choice to get one with the new Intel Core 2 Quad Q9100 CPU if you want more speed.

Alienware Computers, The Ultimate Gaming Machine?

Among computer hardware enthusiasts, hardcore gamers, and early adopters, there is perhaps no computer manufacturer who stands as tall as Alienware. Barely ten years old, and recently purchased by Dell, Alienware rode to the forefront of high technology by concentrating on every facet of design, while incorporating only the latest circuitry inside its machines.
A recent trend known as "case modding", in which computer owners customize the cases of their PC's, can be attributed to Alienware's rich history of unique case designs. Their most popular case design is also one of their earliest - a case that looks like the face of an alien from your favorite science-fiction movie.
But some of the more fresher case designs are based on comic books or movies, including  their best-selling Star Wars and Superman case designs. Using air-brushed figures on the side of the case, cool lighting from within the case's fans, and even a matching included Windows Theme to boot, Alienware took the case mod movement by storm.
When they released their Star Wars versions to coincide with the release of Episode III, they created "Dark Side" and "Light Side" versions to correlate to the different sides of the Force. Even the individual screen savers for each computer were loaded to match their respective cases.
While Alienware's machines have traditionally been considered pricey, it is only because Alienware spares no expense. Buyers of Alienware machines know they are getting only the hottest technology on the market: screaming video cards from NVIDIA, their choice of the latest AMD or Intel processors, liquid cooling systems, plenty of memory, and only the largest and fastest hard drives on the market. Many of Alienware's desktops come equipped with Dual SLI video, a feature that allows two video cards to act as one for nearly twice the processing speed. This feature is rarely found on standard PC's and typically requires a motherboard upgrade.
Prior to the release of Windows Vista, nearly every Alienware computer was already more than adequately configured to handle Vista's demanding hardware requirements. If you just need to surf the web or check email, then the only reason to purchase an Alienware machine is for mere status. But if you want to play the latest games without your computer choking, you'll want to check out Alienware's offerings. Even a one or two-year old Alienware computer will often be more powerful than similarly-priced brand new systems.
Of course, the absolute status symbol has to an Alienware laptop. The heartfelt pride of an Alienware laptop owner is unmatched. Other major laptop manufacturers like IBM and Toshiba have laptops that come close to an Alienware laptop - at the high end of their model lines. But that is where Alienware's model line begins.
Many graphic artists, web design specialists, and even information technology students will find an Alienware computer to be a welcome addition to their lifestyle. Alienware's slogan, "The World's Most Powerful PC's" is without dispute, and they prove their reign in the technology market each month anew.
Several years ago, Alienware also began selling workstations. In a market heavily crowded by IBM, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard, Alienware did something unique: offer workstations for individuals and small businesses that were affordable, but with more raw power than their competitors. Of course, they also offered workstations with features that allowed them to easily double as gaming machines - something not found by their competition.
The only way to purchase an Alienware computer is either second-hand at places like eBay or through their own website. Not everyone can afford a new Alienware machine, but finding a quality used Alienware machine is a treasure to many. Some designs from years past are even considered collectibles.

How To Synchronize Apple iPad 2

If you want to synchronize your Apple iPad 2 so you can put some music or videos from your PC, you are at the right place. Read carefully and follow the instructions how to synchronize your Apple iPad 2 and PC.
You have a couple ways to make the connection:
  • USB cable. Use the cable that comes with your iPad to attach the USB connector to a free USB port on your Mac or Windows PC, and then attach the dock connector to the 30-pin connector port on the bottom of the iPad.
  • Dock. If you shelled out the bucks for an optional iPad dock (a regular dock or a keyboard dock), first plug it in to a power outlet. Using your iPad's cable, attach the USB connector to a free USB port on your Mac or Windows PC, and attach the dock connector to the 30-pin connector port on the back of the dock. Now insert your Apple iPad into the dock's cradle.
Synchronizing Your iPad Automatically
Depending on the storage capacity of your iPad - 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB - you may be able to transfer all your computer's iPad - friendly digital content onto the iPad hard drive. If that sounds like the way you want to go, then you can take advantage of the easiest of the iPad synchronizing scenarios, in which you don't have to pay any attention in the least: automatic synchronization. Because you know all the iPad - able content on your Mac or Windows PC is going to fit, all you have to do is turn on your iPad 2 and connect it to your computer.
iTunes opens automatically, connects to your Apple iPad 2, and begins synchronizing. And just for your information, the USB port also begins charging your iPad's battery.
Note that you can't use your iPad while the synchronization is running. However, one of the iPad's nicest features is that you can interrupt synchronization. When the Sync in Progress screen appears, you see the Slide to Cancel slider at the bottom of the screen. If you ever need to bail out of the synchronization to perform some other duty, drag the slider to the right. iTunes cancels the synchronization so you can go about your business. When you're ready to restart the synchronization, click the Sync button in iTunes.
When the synchronization is done, you need to do two things:
  1. In iTunes, click the Eject icon beside your iPad in the Devices list.
  2. Remove the dock connector from the iPad's 30-pin connector port.
Bypassing the automatic synchronization
Sometimes, you may want to connect your iPad to your computer, but you don't want it to synchronization automatically. For example, you may want to connect your iPad to your computer just to charge it. Or perhaps you just want to use iTunes to check how much free space is left on your iPad 2 or to check for updates to the iPad software.
Whatever the reason, you can tell iTunes to hold off the synchronizing this time only by using one of the following techniques:
  1. Mac. Connect the iPad to the Mac, and then quickly press and hold the Option and Mac keys
  2. Windows. Connect the iPad to the Windows PC, and then quickly press and hold the Control and Shift keys.
When you see that iTunes has added your iPad to the Devices list, you can release the keys. Note, however, that you don't need to use iTunes to see how much free space is left on your iPad. On the Home screen, tap Settings, tap General, and then tap About. In the About screen that slides in, the Available value tells you how many gigabytes (or megabytes) of free space you have to play with.
Troubleshooting automatic synchronization
So, you connect your iPad to your computer and then nothing. If iTunes isn't already running, it refuses to wake up from its. What's up with that?
A couple things could be the problem. First, connect your iPad 2, switch to iTunes on your computer, and then click your iPad 2 in the Devices list. On the Summary tab, make sure the Open iTunes when this iPad is connected check box is selected.
If that check box was already selected, you need to delve a bit deeper to solve the mystery. Follow these steps:
  1. Open the iTunes preferences:
  2. Mac. Choose iTunes > Preferences
  3. Windows. Choose Edit > Preferences
  4. Click the Devices tab.
  5. Deselect the Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from Syncing Automatically check box.
  6. Click OK to put the new setting into effect and enable automatic syncing again.
Syncing Your iPad Manually When you first connected your iPad to iTunes, the brief setup routine included a screen that asked if you wanted to automatically synchronize certain content, such as music and photos. If you activated a check box for a particular type of content, iTunes configure the iPad to synchronize all of that content.
One fine day, you'll be minding your own business and performing what you believe to be a routine synchronization operation when a dialog box pops up telling you iPad 2 is out of hard disk space. You can handle this in a couple of ways:
  1. Remove some of the content from your computer. This is a good way to go if your iPad 2 is really close to having enough space. For example, the dialog says your computer wants to send 100MB of data, but your Apple iPad 2 has only 98MB of free space. Get rid of a few megabytes of stuff on your computer, and you're back in the synchronization business.
  2. Synchronize your iPad manually. This means that you no longer synchronize everything on your computer. Instead, you hand-pick which play-lists, podcasts, audio books, and so on are sent to your iPad. It's a bit more work, but it's the way to go if there's a big difference between the amount of content on your computer and the amount of space left on your iPad.
Synchronizing manually means that you handle the synchronization yourself for the various content types: contacts, calendars, e-mail, bookmarks, music, podcasts, audio books, e-Books, photos, videos, and apps. You do this using the other tabs in the iPad window: Info, Music, Photos, and so on.
Removing data from your iPad 2 and replacing it with fresh info
After you know what you're doing, synchronizing contacts, calendars, e-mail accounts, and bookmarks to your iPad 2 is a relatively bulletproof procedure that should happen without a hitch each time. Of course, this is technology you're dealing with here, so hitches do happen every now and then, and as a result you might end up with corrupt or repeated information on your iPad.
Or perhaps you've been synchronizing your iPad with a couple of different computers, and you decide to cut one of the computers out of the loop and revert to just a single machine for all your synchronization.
In both these scenarios, you need to replace the existing information on your Apple iPad 2 with a freshly baked batch of data. Fortunately, iTunes has a feature that lets you do exactly that. Here's how it works:
  1. Connect your iPad to your computer.
  2. In the iTunes Devices list, click the iPad.
  3. Click the Info tab.
  4. Select the Sync check boxes for each type of information you want to work with (contacts, calendars, e-mail accounts, bookmarks, or notes).
  5. In the Advanced section, select the check box beside each type of information you want to replace.
  6. Click Apply. iTunes replaces the selected information on your iPad.

iPad and iPad 2 - Apple Takes One More Step Further

Update (Tuesday, March 15, 2011): iPad 2 Sales Soaring
iPad 2 sales have been sky-rocketing. Apple sold close to, or over 500,000 iPad 2s last weekend. It's reported that in many cities several retailers like Best Buy, Target and Walmart ran out of stock on the very first day of the launch.
Sources claim a sale of 400,000 to 500,000 iPad 2s as compared to 300,000 of the original iPads in its first weekend. There appears to be a large number of sales made to first time owners of iPad.
iPad 2 retailers should be replenishing the tablet stock this week. Buyers also have the option of ordering online through the Apple or the AT&T site. However this involves a waiting period of 3-4 weeks for Apple and 2-3 weeks for AT&T before shipping the product out.
Apple takes one more step further with the launch of iPad 2
Apple has always been known for introducing products with out-of-the-ordinary designs and innovative features that have never failed to take the consumer market by storm. Years ago this started with the iPod revolution. Today iPod with its several designs and models has been a must-have possession for music lovers. Then came iPhone which was akin to having a mini-computer with a phone in your pocket. With its sleek design and features and increasing popularity, it soon proved to be a phone that everyone was proud to flaunt.
The launch of iPad
Apple did not stop at that and the market saw the advent of Apple's popular touchscreen tablet device, the iPad, which went on sale in April of last year. The aesthetics and the ease-of-use of iPad was worth raving about. Though there was a section of the consumer market that was apprehensive of the usability of the tablet and called it merely a status symbol, people gradually starting to appreciate the ease-of-use, portability and convenience it brought whether you had to surf the internet, check emails, use it as a music jukebox or for document processing and file-management.
It soon gained popularity amongst students who preferred studying their notes from the iPad. It's longer-than laptop battery life and light-weightedness made it popular amongst those who are frequently on the go. Right now at the App Store, there are thousands of apps available to download that open a whole new world of features to the iPad. iPad apps are expanding the learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. From interactive lessons to study aids to productivity tools, there's something for everyone. iBooks on iPad has introduced a novel way to buy and read books.
The world of business apps for iPad will transform the way you work. On iPad, you can review and edit common office documents such as Microsoft Office and iWork files. You can also create beautiful presentations from scratch, craft complex spreadsheets, annotate PDFs, and access important files on your corporate network.
The increasing popularity was clearly evident from the iPad sales which shot to 7.46 million by September 2010, which was just 6 months after its launch. Reports say that the last 3 months of 2010 saw an additional sale of 7.33 million iPads.
Though Apple's Steve Jobs introduced the iPad as a device that would occupy the world between smart phones and laptops, potential customers weren't convinced because of certain missing and expected features. To mitigate these gaps, Apple unveiled the iPad 2 on March 2. The long anticipated iPad2 will debut the market on March 11, 2011. The iPad 2 has also been rumored to be called "iPad HD".
Here are some of the upgrades to the iPad2 in comparison to the original iPad:
Faster Processor with great graphics
iPad2 has 2 core processors (dual-core) in one A5 chip. This is an upgrade to the A4 processor in the original iPad. You'll notice the difference when you're surfing the web, watching movies, making FaceTime video calls, gaming, and switching from app to app. Multitasking is smoother, apps load faster, and everything just works better.
With up to nine times the graphics performance, playing games on iPad is even faster, smoother and more realistic. Even with the sleeker design and higher power, Apple claims the battery life will still stay the same amazing 10 hours.
FaceTime again with two cameras
iPad2 has 2 cameras - one on the front and one on the back. The Apple fans got a taste of FaceTime with the launch of iPhone 4. It has been gaining so much popularity lately that iPad2 has decided to add the FaceTime functionality to the iPad2 through the two cameras. The front camera puts you and your friend face-to-face. Switch to the back camera during your video call to share where you are, who you're with, or what's going on around you. When you're not using FaceTime, let the back camera roll if you see something movie-worthy. It's HD, so whatever you shoot is a mini-masterpiece.
More variety with Two Colors
iPad2 is available in both black and white whereas the original iPad was only available in black.
Lighter and Thinner in your hands
Apple promises to deliver what it advertises about iPad being 'Less in your hands, More at your fingertips'.iPad2 will really make you feel the difference when you hold it your hands. iPad2 is up to 15% lighter than the original iPad. The iPad2's WiFi-only model weighs about 1.3 pounds. The lighter weight could mean a lot for those always on the go and for those who like to carry their iPad around like any other book.
Apple is known to give a lot of importance on the sleekness and thinness of their gadgets. iPad2 is 33% thinner than the original iPad. It is 0.34 inch (8.8 mm) thin.
Introducing the iPad Smart Cover
The iPad Smart Cover protects your iPad without adding bulk to its thin, light design. It works with iPad such that the smart magnetic technology built into each really pulls them together. Open the Smart Cover and your iPad wakes up instantly. Close it and your iPad goes to sleep automatically. The smart cover also acts as a perfect stand for the iPad when you are watching movies or playing games.
The above lists only the major visible upgrades. There is much more in store including the gyroscope, accelerometer, compass, HDMI out and the features supported by the new operating system iOS 4.3
Undoubtedly, iPad2 will prove to be incredible technology under your fingers. It definitely is up to an individual whether he would like to invest in iPad2 after having invested in the original iPad. One would think pricing and affordability would be a concern here, but history has it that Apple has its strategies well-thought of, be it design, development or marketing. The release and sales of the several upgraded versions of iPod and iPhone are excellent examples. It is rumored, that the new targets for 2011 is that Apple will ship up to 4 million iPad2 per month, reaching a total of 40 million iPads for 2011. And despite competition from big brand vendors like Samsung, Motorola and more, analysts predict that iPad2 will continue the Apple's tablet dominance in the market.
Latest on the iPad2
So the latest for those waiting to possess the iPad2 is that it goes on sale Friday March 11 at 5PM and two weeks later in 26 other countries. Unfortunately, Apple is not taking pre-orders for their second generation iPad. Reports reason that when pre-orders began for the Verizon iPhone, there were so many pre-orders that it took both the Verizon and Apple online stores down within two hours. Though the sales were enormous, the reality lines were short at Verizon stores since most people pre-ordered online. Apple does not want this to happen again. Apple wants long lines for iPad2 which would provide better advertising for a major Apple product release. March 11 would see many who owned the original iPad upgrading to the newer model, while many others who didn't get the first generation iPad buying their first iPad.

My 12 Favorite Apps for the iPad - January 2011 Edition

Every few days I am asked what are the best apps for the iPad and what my iPad favorite apps are. In fact, last May, I wrote about My 12 Favorite iPad Apps where I called out 12 of the best apps for iPad so I thought I'd revisit the list to see if my favorites have changed. As expected, my top apps for iPad have evolved over time. For example, only three of the twelve iPad apps have remained on my list for best apps for iPad including Kindle, Zinio and Mail.
#12 Starting at #12, iBooks makes the best iPad app list. The one and only reason iBooks made my iPad apps favorite list is because iBooks provides an excellent interface to store and read PDFs.
Having used several PDF readers including the popular GoodReader for the iPad, I prefer the way iBooks stores the PDFs showing the PDFs cover in the library view and the ability to sync via iTunes or attached to an email that you open and send to the iBooks app and these features make iBooks one of the best apps on iPad.
There are a few features in iBooks I don't use including the fact iBooks provides access to Apple's iBookstore which allows you to download and read the latest books and classics. Additionally you can make notes and highlight passages in your eBook and use AirPrint to print the PDF with your notes included.
#11 My next best app for iPad and latest obsession/time sink is Words for Friends HD. If you have not heard of Word for Friends, you must be the only one! Words with Friends HD is a crossword game (think Scrabble) that is socially played against friends with a NewToy Inc account. While there is an iPhone app for Words with Friends, the larger screen of the iPad allows better vision across the entire board allowing me to smoke my foes!
#10 The iPad app on my iPad favorite apps list is one of the best iPad apps for kids available and my four year old daughter's favorite iPad app. DressUpBaby provides an intuitive and simple interface for my four year old daughter using cute characters and funky clothes and accessories. I randomly receive outfits emailed from my daughter using the camera function on one of her top apps for iPad.
#9 Next on my list of iPad best apps is also one of my iPad productivity apps. Remoter is a VNC (Virtual Network Computing) client for the iPad that provides the ability to virtually control your desktop over the network from your iPad. I've used the client to control both Windows and Mac machines, but VNC will also work with various UNIX flavors. This app has saved me too many times while I'm out but needed something from work making this one of my best iPad apps.
#8 Whistle turns my iPad into a networked conference phone making this app high on my best apps for iPad. I use Whistle as a client for an Asterix PBX, a 3rd party SIP service) that allows me to make a call from the "office" anywhere that I have an Internet connection. Whistle provides integration with my Contacts (which is synced with Google's cloud) and with the latest iOS loaded I can continue Whistle calls in the background as I continue to use the iPad. Speakerphone works amazingly, but Whistle also supports the Apple Headphones allowing you to answer calls with the center button. This app enables business and is one of my top productivity apps for iPad providing a business tool to work virtually.
#7 Kindle constantly makes everyone's best iPad apps list and is no exception for the Geeks favorite apps for iPad. The Kindle app provides an easy to use interface and provides access to Amazon's Whispersync service to automatically sync your last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights across your Kindle devices. The Amazon Kindle store provides over 800K eBooks at the same price or better than other eBook retailers.
#6 Next on my best apps for the iPad list, Toodledo provides access to my cloud-based task manager service and provides easy access to my to do list. Apple ranked Toodledo in the top 30 paid iPad apps of all time, and in the top 200 for iPhone - Jan 2011 and is one of my favorite iPad apps and one of my top productivity apps for iPad.
#5 Evernote is another cloud-based note service that is one of my top productivity apps for iPad and one of the best apps for iPad. The Evernote iPad app provides my primary interface to take and view notes, including voice notes, while I'm not in my home office. Evernote then automatically syncs with the cloud-based service so you can view the notes on the iPad, one of the desktop Evernote applications, or the web. The Evernote app was inducted into the Apple "App Hall of Fame", on the NY Times "Top 10 Must-Have Apps" list and has been the winner of the Best Mobile App Award from TechCrunch, Mashable and the Webbys and, in my opinion, one of the best apps on iPad.
#4 One of the included apps, the Calendar app, is one of my most used and therefore one of my iPad favorite apps. The Calendar iPad App is laid out well and keeps my schedule straight by syncing with Google's cloud-based calendar service.
#3 If you subscribe to Netflix, you should have one of the best iPad apps available to access the service with the Netflix app. The app provides access to your Netflix account to instantly watch TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix as part of your Netflix unlimited membership. I use this app almost nightly to watch TV shows and is one of the best apps on iPad.
#2 Zinio is one of my favorite apps for iPad and using Zinio I receive all my magazine digitally instead in the mail as the Zinio iPad app provides thousands of magazine titles with special interactive and graphical features synced directly to your iPad. I started using Zinio over 5 years ago, and those archived magazines are available through the Zinio app!
#1 Ever since getting the iPad, I've used the device as my primary means of obtaining most of my work and all of my personal email using the included Mail App and therefore, Mail is my best iPad app. The interface is great for a tablet and thanks to the portable nature of the device, the Mail App helps maintain my quest to maintain a zero inbox.

iPad 2 - New and Updated Review

iPad 2 review
The iPad2-release date in the US was March 11th. Review of Apple's iPad 2 is not a simple one way task. The new iPad 2 compared to last year's extremely popular version, the iPad 2 is almost equivalent with regards to software, nevertheless more improved and also similar in terms of the hardware side at the same time.
The new iPad 2 has a 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display and although inside there is a new dual core A5 CPU, more memory and a couple of new cameras, the majority of the iPad 2′s changes are merely decorative.
The iPad 2 will probably still stand above its competitors. This means the new iPad 2, a slimmer, even faster version of the original is probably not changing many of its new surfaces however it's already at the forefront of the herd.
The questions are is the iPad 2 worth an upgrade for people who own the first version? Moreover, does the new version have the required capabilities to get new customers to the brand? Those inquirers and more will be answered in this review, so.just read on.
The iPad 2 release date in the US was March 11th. From a manufacturing style and design viewpoint, the new iPad 2 significantly increased the criteria with a beautiful appealing computer appliance. For anyone who is the owner of the first device, you already know there were no short cuts taken in the design aspect, nevertheless its latest version takes it to a whole other level. The very first thing you will likely notice with regard to the iPad 2 is that it's amazingly thin. In the widest peak of it, the tablet is only 0.35-inches as opposed to the original iPad being one half inch of width. The device is marginally shorter compared to the prior model but additionally somewhat less wider, only 7.3-inches opposed to the iPad's 7.47-inches. The iPad 2 really seems incredibly slender whenever one will hold it.
Steve Jobs stated at the unveiling event, the unit is thinner compared to the amazingly thin iPhone 4 which is an impressive accomplishment taking into consideration what's stored within the iPad 2. The most dramatic change is the weight. At 680 grams, the iPad 2 is 80g lighter compared first iPad.
Much like the first version, the iPad version 2 frontages of the unit is entirely comprised of the screen, the home button is located in the bottom of the panel. The iPad 2 does include a camera opposite from that button towards the top of the unit, however the small camera is hardly detectable. Around back there's the known, sleek lightweight aluminum from the prior version. It does feel marginally smoother here, a modest spotted speaker grid about the downwards left, a camera about the top left, and based upon which model you will get, the 3G iPad version 2 antenna across the top back. The volume controls and mute button sit on the rear left side of the device; while on the right you can find the Micro SIM slot (on 3G iPad 2 versions). The top reveals a power up / sleep button about the higher right side. Most of the features are well known for an iPad, but all well and neatly assembled on this tiny body figure.
In all, the iPad 2 has an extremely tidy attractive and sexy kit.
Images and Snap shots, don't fairly represent the true experience of the iPad 2 and its look and feel. The iPad 2 feels extremely astonishing in your hands.
Putting aside the smart development it provides with a feeling of a real pleasure. Apple is recognized for its professional unique design and the new iPad 2 is brilliantly and carefully assembled.
iPad 2 Features
A lot has been talked about in terms of what is new on the interface of the iPad 2.
To begin with, the iPad 2 is 'twice as fast' as the original iPad, running the brand-new dual core A5 CPU built by ARM.
Actually the difference between the speed of the performance of the first iPad and the iPad version 2 is not that noticeable.
Several apps, such as the Safari browser and the iPad 2 media app, start up as quickly as the first iPad. However you will find that apps such as iMovie and GarageBand do run considerably faster.
There's now 512MB of RAM in the iPad 2, bringing it up to iPhone 4 specifications, which actually already seems low to us. A device of the iPad 2nd generation in this particular category should likely end up having 1GB, though there are no memory concerns. Strangely is that the size and the resolution of the new iPad 2 screens is identical to the screen size and resolution of the original iPad with just 1024 x 768 pixels. The screen is similar to the first model, a 1024 x 768, 9.7 inch display. Although the display looks good we would love it if there would be a uplift and update in the iPad 2nd generation resolution.
The vast majority of the update power on the new iPad 2 arises from the A5 processor and our initial tests reveal that this dual-core chip can give some noticable quality speed, particularly in apps like iMovie.
We also made a small test by turning on the iPad 2nd generation media player on both the iPad and the iPad 2 with the exact same music and movie files and noticed some speed variations - the iPad 2 finished loading just a couple of seconds sooner than the first iPad.
A few other features are also new or increased their performance:
Both of the two iPad 2 cameras, one being for photos and the other for video chats, have a faster visuals engines which will make games more accessible.
Despite having the faster processor and improved graphics engine, the battery of the iPad 2 still persists about ten hours.
On the speaker front, Apple has transferred the iPad's single speaker towards the back of the device. The sound seems crisper and relatively quieter compared to the previous iPad version and that we can't say is a significant advancement in terms of the location in the new iPad.
iPad 2 Internet and Browsing Features
Apple has applied the Safari browser on iPad 2 and its upgraded engine, saying performance is double the speed faster. Within our findings that statement is a bit of exaggeration.
Regarding sites that use HTML5, we saw a really good performance from the iPad 2nd generation. The sites loaded up quickly and formatted images properly.
Sites that make major use of Adobe Flash failed to load because of the iPad 2 is short of Flash support.
Flash video websites only loaded in bits and failed to play videos. There is still loads of data we couldn't view because Apple won't provide Flash support on its device.
To conclude, internet browsing is not a really good incentive to upgrade to the iPad 2 - it runs with comparable speed as the original iPad.
iPad 2 Media Features
Apple wins hands-down for media availability when compared to other tablets.
One of the iPad 2 specs is that you can rent or buy almost any TV show or movie, find albums from virtually any indie performer in the world and have the iPad 2 automatically download audio and video media without any hassle. This is one of the main achievements and one of the main iPad specs in which the iPad 2 have a strong dominate over other tablets is the easy and accessible feature to content, because they have licensing arrangements for enormous quantity of content.
Yet, the iPad 2 does not really improve on media viewing itself.
In HD movies that we played on the new iPad 2, the stream was smooth yet the iPad 2 still leaves room for improvement, as it could offer a display with a more colorful and sharper look.
For anyone who wish to get video over to your TV, you might want to grab Apple's new HDMI dongle anther one of the iPad 2 specs, that enables you to connect straight into your HDTV. The adapter worked perfectly and once an HD video was running within the iPad 2, it sent that content to the TV without any difficulty or problems in any aspect.
Home Sharing is among the latest features of the iPad 2nd generation.
Basically, it suggests that you are able to stream music, movies, and TV shows from your computer over Wi-Fi, you of course still have to get the content. You simply cannot watch media straight from the web without bringing into play the third-party application such as Netflix.
Within our tests, several episodes of 30 rock streamed easily and properly coming from a MacBook Pro.
With Video formats there were excellent results with platforms such as H.264 MPEG-4 and we discovered that, as expected, formats like Windows Media did not work. Moreover the widely used open-source HD format MKV file failed to work in the new iPad. For now, you might need a VLC application in order to use those files.
iPad 2, iMovie and GarageBand apps
The known iMovie application provides plenty of accessible features for video editing, plus it manages to do it inexpensively, at merely $4.99. iMovie app now enables you to edit both videos you've shot within unit and imported files in a user friendly platform that's actually more user friendly than its desktop space.
You'll be able to instantly upload your material to a selection of sources, including YouTube, Vimeo, CNN's iReport, and Facebook and yes it can be done in HD. From our experience, the process worked flawlessly.
Another great app is the GarageBand app, that one is truly a wonder app. The app includes numerous pianos, guitars and drums, along with other musical instruments. Above all, these instruments, especially the piano and drums, reply to soft touches and stiff finger presses perfectly.
iPad 2 Smart Cover
The iPad 2 Apple's Smart Covers nifty modest cover case are mainly touch screen protectors using a number of sharp magnets across the side area as opposed to having to wrap around your new iPad or holding the device with straps.
The cover attaches with effectively fitted magnets and protecting and covering your new iPad and results in a very impressive effect..
Furthermore the covers put your device to sleep and wake it as you close or open the flaps. The covers also have a microfiber inside layer, which would seem to help keep your screen clean.
We were very impressed with the benefit of the Smart Cover and their overall appearance.
iPad 2 Camera and Multimedia
As the well known addition for the iPad 2nd generation, the front iPad 2 camera and the back camera, are certainly a welcome addition, yet it is not ideal for any professional photography or for high-def video chats. The iPad 2 is not a flawless device, in fact in our findings the iPad2 cameras are really less than ideal.
It's annoying due to the fact that if the standard resulted in being higher, the iPad 2 camera might have become a great chat tool.
First, for photography, the rear-facing iPad 2 camera records video at 960×720. However in our tests, the recorded video looked rather poorly and simply not good enough. Worse was the 0.7-megapixel new iPad 2 camera is below average.
Most test images looked slightly blurry.
The front VGA-resolution iPad 2 cameras aren't a great deal better. You can capture 0.3-megapixel still images, yet its almost impossible to utilize it for anything aside from plain dull portraits.
In a FaceTime video iPad 2 specs, the video quality looked incredibly the same as the plain basic iPhone 4 cameras.
Conclusion
For now we quite simply think that the new iPad 2 is the best tablet available on the market. For those who own the first iPad, unfortunately we cannot suggest that an iPad upgrade is a must. If you don't necessarily need cameras on your tablet, you've still got a worthy device that still holds a lot of the assets of the latest OS and applications. However we can understand an iPad upgrade based upon the fact that the new design and style speaks for itself in encouraging anyone wishing to upgrade his or her iPad. It's simply stunning, and maintains the solid, premium feel as the initial iPad.
